JIPMER was once rated as the third best medical college in India. The reason most beleive that it keeps losing the pole position to AIIMS is becuase of the lack of services and facilities for the students. If the ranking system considered only the teaching faculty then there is high chance that JIPMER would be unbeatable in that race.
Take the Student's Mess for example. Ten years ago the Mess basic was just Rs 750 per month. It was run by two students who came forward each month. The food was not the best but good enough. Now the Mess Basic is over Rs 1000, it is run by private contractors and the food is unpalatable.
I remember one time the Dean and Director (and their usual entourage) got some itch and visited the Mess. Some of the students were in line waiting for food to be served. Suddenly they walk out from the cooking area and one of them said to the students in line "Do you know how filthy it is back there?"
What do you think? Of course we know how filthy it is. And we know more about the unhygenic practices of the cooks than you care to know about. But it is your responsibility to provide us with good clean food. What do you expect the students to do; spend their free time scrubbing the kitchen floor?
Over the past few years the Mess Basic has been regualy going up and the food quality going down. More and more students are being forced to get food from outside. Not only is this more expensive but it takes a lot more time. Time which can be spent doing what they are there to do; studying.
With this and other inconveniences abound in the Hostel, the warden can be seen fretting about the grass on the hostel lawn or the flower beds in front of his office.

He gets the grass cut every other month. And then grows another set of grass. Or transplants a layer of grass.
And what about the holes being drilled into the building ? He gets holes drills and covers the opening with plaster, with some strange belief that it will help eradicate the termite problem.
Yes, there is a termite infestation too ...

Ok Let's see 10 years ago would make it 1997, the mess basic then was 650/-, 12 years ago i.e. 1995, it was 400/-. And yeah I don't know how the mess run by the contractors is, but the student mess was pretty good. Grand special dinner was something to write home about. and in our time we destroyed one warden (Dr.Thappa) for interfering too much with the students (Guys mutilated his bike, his office, etc till he quit).
the quality of food supplied in the mess has certainly gone down to dogs----distasteful n bland food is being provided , and students refuse to take these .... the mess contractor has capitalised on it by providing extraas n charging the hapless students more n more.
loads of chicken r being slaughtered daily to force students to eat in the mess since goingout or ordering is out of normal means
Better not to say anything about our gr8 gr8 mess.....O! God its really a mess!... Some strange dishes are prepared here wich I saw 4 the 1st time here...e.g. whole brinjals with the stalks intact too! These brinjals follow a peculiar route......The plant> the kitchen fire> the students tray(most of us dont take ...we prefer an empty utensil instaed)>mess dustbin (coz no one even likes to touch the worm infested brinjals)>cow's stomach......
For the piddly money we paid, I thought the food was reasonable in the past. However, I am not sure how things are now.
Those of you who are still there and are complaining here, guys, What have you done about it expect complain?
Has anyone of you taken up the mess and run it?
Can anybody tell me if it is possible to use induction cook tops in the hostel as I have heard the food in the hostel is awful!
